Want to install low-voltage landscape lighting but aren't sure where to start?
The good news is that a basic 12V landscape lighting system is easier to understand than it may seem. You need the right fixtures, an appropriately sized transformer, low-voltage cable, weather-resistant connections, and a thoughtful plan for where your lights should go.

Step 1: Decide What You Want to Light
Before buying fixtures, walk around your property after dark and identify the areas that would benefit most from lighting.
Common areas include:

Walkways and pathways

Front entrances

Driveways
-
Trees
-
Garden beds

Columns and architectural features
-
Patios and outdoor living areas

Retaining walls

Steps and decks
Don't try to illuminate everything.
Good landscape lighting uses a combination of light and shadow to highlight important areas while creating depth throughout the property.

Step 2: Choose the Right Fixtures
Different landscape lighting fixtures are designed for different purposes.
Path Lights
Use along walkways, garden paths, driveways, and planting beds.
Spot Lights / Up Lights
Use to highlight trees, columns, architectural features, and other focal points.
Well Lights
Use for discreet uplighting when you want the fixture to remain less visible within the landscape.
Flood Lights
Use when you need broader illumination across larger trees, walls, or landscape areas.
Hardscape Lights
Install beneath retaining wall caps, outdoor kitchen counters, seating walls, and other masonry features.
Step & Deck Lights
Use on stairs, decks, posts, and vertical surfaces where additional visibility is needed.
Most attractive landscape lighting designs use several fixture types together rather than relying on one style throughout the property.
Step 3: Sketch Your Lighting Plan
Make a simple drawing of your property and mark:

Proposed cable routes
Your sketch doesn't need to be perfect. Its purpose is to help you estimate how many fixtures you'll need and how the system will be organized.
For larger properties, divide the project into zones such as:
Front Entry • Walkways • Trees • Backyard • Patio
This makes installation and future expansion easier.
Step 4: Calculate Your Total Wattage
Every fixture or LED lamp consumes a certain number of watts.
Add the wattage of all the lights in your planned system.
For example:
8 path lights × 4W = 32W
6 up lights × 6W = 36W
4 hardscape lights × 3W = 12W
Total connected load = 80W
You'll use this number to help determine the appropriate transformer capacity.
Step 5: Size Your Transformer
The transformer converts standard household power into the low-voltage electricity used by your landscape lighting system.
A useful planning guideline is:
Total Fixture Wattage ÷ 0.80 = Minimum Transformer Capacity
Using the 80-watt example:
80W ÷ 0.80 = 100W
You would therefore select a transformer with at least 100 watts of appropriate capacity.
If you expect to add more lights in the future, consider selecting the next suitable transformer size so the system has room to expand.
Always follow the specifications and installation instructions for the transformer you're using.
Step 6: Plan Your Cable Runs
Low-voltage landscape cable carries electricity from the transformer to your fixtures.
Rather than automatically placing every light on one extremely long cable run, larger systems may benefit from multiple runs back to the transformer.
This can help with:

Future expansion
Wire gauge, cable length, fixture load, fixture distribution, and system layout can all affect voltage at the fixtures.

Step 7: Lay Everything Out Before You Dig
Before burying cable or permanently installing fixtures, lay out the system above ground.
Place your fixtures approximately where you want them and route the cable along the planned paths.
This gives you a chance to make adjustments before installation becomes more difficult.
Leave some extra cable near fixtures and connections so lights can be repositioned or serviced later.
Always call 811 before digging.
Cable should be installed according to its manufacturer instructions and applicable local requirements. Do not assume that one burial depth applies to every installation.
Step 8: Install and Connect Your Fixtures
Secure each fixture according to its installation instructions.
If the fixture uses a replaceable LED lamp, install the appropriate lamp type and wattage.
Make all cable connections using connectors designed and listed for the intended outdoor or direct-burial application.
Outdoor landscape lighting connections are exposed to moisture, irrigation, soil, and changing temperatures, so properly installed weather-resistant connections are essential for long-term reliability.
Step 9: Test Before Finishing
Once your connections are complete and you've performed the appropriate safety checks, power on the system.
Make sure every fixture works before completing cable burial or restoring the landscape.
Check for:

Lights that aren't working

Unusually dim fixtures

Flickering
-
Loose connections
-
Noticeable brightness differences
Long cable runs and higher electrical loads can contribute to voltage drop. More complex systems may require voltage measurements at the fixtures while the system is operating.
Step 10: Make Final Adjustments After Dark
Don't consider the installation finished until you've seen it at night.
Walk around the property and adjust each fixture.
Look for:

Glare

Uneven lighting
-
Fixtures aimed too high

Overly bright areas
-
Important features that need more emphasis
Sometimes moving a fixture only a few inches or slightly changing its angle can dramatically improve the effect.
Remember: professional-looking landscape lighting isn't about making everything bright.
It's about directing light where it creates the greatest visual and functional impact.
